An organisation promoting interdisciplinary research between laboratories

As part of its ambitious research strategy, Université Bretagne Sud has been organised into four centres of excellence and innovation. This structure makes it possible to develop interdisciplinary research between research laboratories.

UBS has been able to develop a strategic vision based on effective research both in terms of its fundamental nature and its applications in economic and social life. Research at UBS takes place both within what is an outward-looking socio-economic geographical area and a regional scientific group. Internationally, bilateral exchanges are instituted between laboratories.

In its process of differentiation and specialisation the challenge for the University of South Brittany is on one hand, to federate research around major themes while preserving other research outside this framework, and, on the other, to go into more depth in certain areas relating, in whole or in part, to the centres of excellence in research and innovation.

Founded in the cross-disciplinary nature of the disciplines, the UBS research strategy is built around four research and innovation centres formed by the 14 research laboratories:

Humans, Sea & Coastline

This centre aims to reconcile industrial and technological development with sustainable development. The eco-design of materials, energy savings in manufacturing processes and phases of use and the improvement of digital simulation methods are at the heart of this field of excellence. The aim, more particularly, is to develop areas such as the recyclability of materials used, biosourced materials, new materials and the shaping and then the maintenance in service of these materials for different requirements.

Materials & Energy

From maritime history to the design of new materials for boat hulls, from the development of innovative antifouling paints to the development and urbanisation of the geographical area, from safety at sea to the development of new sensors, from data processing to decision-making aids, from biofilms to the matching of resources to uses, this centre provides close links between coastal issues and human activities and practices in coastal societies.

Digital

The development of interconnected systems requires the coordination of a complete chain of skills from sensors to information processing and modelling of knowledge and data to embedded hardware and software architectures.
UBS is positioned in the two strategic sectors of cyber security and data science.

Customs & Societies

The study of societies through a diachronic and synchronic perspective is the object of this centre: human practices, the transmission of cultures, cultural and economic heritage, discourses and practices, representations and history and current societal issues. New practices are the subject of research in which various approaches are mobilised: sociological, psychological, linguistic, historical, literary, legal and economic.
