This master's degree opens new opportunities for students coming from the arts, literature, languages and social sciences, but also for students from the sciences wishing to enter the training sector. It provides a coherent outcome an study option that can begin at bachelor's level.
The master has developed a clear identity within educational offer of the Brittany region and the RUOA ( West Atlantic University Network): it offers an original articulation between the fields of publishing and document and information management. It is structured around a common-core syllabus in the first year that leads to vocational and research specialisations, whilst retaining bridges between all the specialisations. Many of the vocational and research specialisations are unique both in the region and beyond,
The aim of the Master's degree is to train executives, researchers and engineers in publishing, the conception and management of documents, and in all related research fields.
The specificities of the Master's degree are to make accessible the concepts, analytical methods and technology from the Information and Cognition Technologies. The graduates are able to meet the requirements of the business market and to create the jobs of tomorrow in the field information and document management.
The training provides the technical skills required in the world of publishing, with a special emphasis on the technical know-how of the publishers of dictionaries and training/learning equipment. It introduces students to the creation of ergonomically improved documents, to document management and systems of management watch.
Moreover, it provides indispensable knowledge for researchers in language engineering, corpus linguistics and lexicography. In a general way, it assures a strong background knowledge of computing skills for publishing and document and information management.
The first semester is based on a common-core syllabus, which initiates the students to the main knowledge domains developed by the master's degree. It is a coherent whole which aims to show the interaction between these various areas of applied knowledge and the possible specialisations offered in the second year.
The second semester is also based on a common-core syllabus completed by a set of options to prepare for the various specialisations available in year 2. Some of the teaching is in English so as to allow international students to follow a complete semester. English classes in the common-core syllabus have backup teaching aids in French on the platform Moodle. Non French-speaking students are expected courses in French as a second language.
The master's degree was first conceived in collaboration with professionals of the world of publishing and document management. Representatives from these industries participate on professional liaison council of the master's degree and regularly evaluate proposals to improve training and integration in the working place.
Many of the courses are taught by professionals from industry.
In addition, regional companies in the fields of publishing and document management regularly offer work placements opportunities to the students.
Students are expected to undertake two work placements: and 8 weeks period at the end of the first year and 16 week period in the second year.
The international aspect of the master's degree is essential to develop both our research activities and our international programs.
The cooperation established with the university of Kaunas in Lithuania is the first step in the setting-up of the master's degree of corpus linguistics at European wide level. Links established with corpus linguistics' research bodies in Central and Western Europe will enable the expansion of universities network which could ultimately lead to requesting the European Erasmus Mundus label.
This master's degree has also already developed strong working realationships with the universities of Bologne, Bari, Cassino (Italy), Démocrite - Thrace (Greece) and Pecs (Hungary).
