A bit of history


The University of South Brittany (UBS) is a French public scientific, vocational and cultural institution. A medium-sized university with strong local ties, UBS is network-based, multidisciplinary in outlook, modern in its culture of a young university (opened in 1995) and youthful in its staff and outlook.

Some key dates

1966 : First delocalised site. Founding of the School of law and economics in Vannes.

1970: Opening of the IUT (Technical College) of Vannes.

1971 : Opening of the IUT of Lorient

1990 : State contract for the creation of new universities (Plan Université 2000).

1991 : Setting up of university development pole taking in the sites of Lorient and Vannes.

1992 : Founding of the Institut Universitaire Professionnalisé (IUP - University Institute for Vocational Studies) of Lorient and the Institut Universitaire Professionnalisé (IUP) of Vannes.

1995 : Founding of the University of South Brittany (Université de Bretagne Sud - UBS) by decree on the 7th of February as the 4th Breton university. Professor Maurice Liévrement is appointed as temporary administrator. UBS is public scientific, vocational and cultural institution.

1999 : Adoption of the definitive statutes of UBS and election of the first statutory boards.

2000 : Election of Professor Gilles Prado,  first president of the University of South Brittany

 2001 : UBS signs its first 4 year contract with the State and IUT of Lorient opens a department in Pontivy.

2004 :  UBS signs its second 4 year contract with the State and adopts the Bologna system (LMD - Licence-Master-Doctorat  or Bachelor, Master and Doctorate). Professor Eric Martin is elected president on the 3rd of December 2004. He takes office on the 20th of January 2005.

 2007 : UBS is a founding member of the new European University of Brittany (UEB). Created by decree in March 2007, UEB is a consortium comprising all the Breton higher education and research institutions bringing together some 70 000 students and 6000 staff.

Its main focus is on doctorate programmes and the promotion of research in seeking greater international recognition.

In September 2007,Ensibs, the national school of engineering of South Brittany, receives its first intake of students in Lorient and Vannes.

2008 : UBS adopts its new statutes in December 2007 following the university reforms giving greater independence to universities  (Loi LRU - Libertés et Responsabilités des Universités du 10 août 2007). The entirety of the personnel are invited to elect representatives to the three statutory boards of governance.

2009 : On the 1st of July 2009, UBS, along with the 5 founding members (AZIMUT, CELTIPHARM, General Council of Morbihan, Crédit Coopératif Lorient, SOLEDIS) launches the University of South Brittany Foundation. This foundation aims to promote UBS-based research and its cutting edge teaching programmes, as well as develop partnerships with companies and to support and nurture student talents.

 On the 4th of December 2009 Professor Olivier Sire is elected  President of UBS.

2010 : UBS accedes to greater independence of its management functions under the new law.  It assumes full responsibility for its budget and staff management. In close collaboration with its students, its faculties, research groups and personnel, the university gains the possibility to better exploit its contract with the state.

20th January 2010,  Professor Olivier Sire takes office as President of UBS.
